This is the grainy image of Mick Donovan, formally known as Paul Drake, the man who abducted Shannon Matthews.
This photo was taken some years ago and the little boy is Shannon's stepfather Craig.
Mandy Dixon, 37, who witnessed the rescue, described her neighbour as "a scrawny, scruffy, horrible man who had his kids taken off him last year". But as more and more information comes out about Donovan/Drake, now aged 39, we can gain a fuller more truthful picture.
Paul Drake, as he was then, married Susan Bird in 1996 and the couple had two daughters, now aged 12 and 10. However, the couple separated and their children were taken into care. "This killed him", according to his sister, Shannon's step-grandmother.
Donovan had lived in Lidgate Gardens for about three years and was forever cleaning and sitting in his beloved silver Peugeot 406 car. This car has now been taken away for forensic evidence.
Mick Donovan is known to the police because, quote; 'he took his eldest daughter from school'. Must have happened after he lost custody otherwise does not make any sense.
It is reported that he lives on disability and when he was dragged from his flat yesterday he would not get up and demanded that the police listen to his needs of being a poorly man.
Bollocks mate, you took a child, I have no sympathy!
This man who who is known by two different names - WHY? Maybe he had been keeping Shannon since the day she was missing. She appears to be well fed and it is possible he had a breakdown of some sort? I am guessing here and no medical expert. Family reports are that Shannon and he were both at a funeral (his father, Shannon's step-grandfather). Who knows what what going on in his head?
Shannon has now been taken into care and this has become a very complicated story. Mother and daughter have been briefly reunited. The police say the protection order is to protect Shannon and at first I wondered, (and I bet the police are thinking this too), if this is as neat an ending as everyone wants it to be for the immediate family?)
What if family members were coming and going from Donovan's flat?
What if some people/some family members, knew where Shannon was all along?
Why did Shannon not scream for help? What was she told?
Not saying either of those sentences are true; however, the police will be looking at all leads won't they?
Shannon was found in Batley Car (right) about a mile from where she lives in Dewsbury Moor (left)
Facts on the case
- Sniffer dogs were taken to more than 500 addresses, but no solid leads ever emerged.
- Officers were also busy viewing piles of CCTV tapes from the area, and well as investigating neighbours and relatives. PAUL DRAKE/MICK DONOVAN was a routine visit yesterday. Police remained and took more than a routine interest because of neighbour's evidence and because Donovan's car which he always took when going out, remained parked outside his flat.
- There are 1,387 registered sex offenders live within a 20-mile radius of the nine-year-old's family home in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire. Eleven of these went to ground during the investigation.
For now Shannon is safe. A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Shannon Matthews has been away from home for almost four weeks."As part of our ongoing inquiries, and following medical checks, West Yorkshire Police will begin the process of interviewing Shannon."This may be a long process but throughout this inquiry our main focus has been and continues to be Shannon's welfare. We have therefore taken the decision that, for now, it is in Shannon's best interests that she be made subject of an Emergency Police Protection Order."This will remain in place until we have had time to establish the full facts of what happened in the time since her disappearance."
The immediate celebrating is over......Now is the time for gentle questions and answers from Donovan/Drake (Whatever you want to call him - *&%**))&).
