Paul Schofield, Oscar Winning Actor Has Died


Oscar-winning actor Paul Scofield has died, his agent Rosalind Chatto, announced today. He was 86.

He had been diagnosed with leukaemia and died peacefully yesterday in a hospital near to his Sussex home, Ms Chatto added.

Scofield won an oscar in 1966 for his portrayal of Sir Thomas More in the film of Robert Bolt's A Man For All Seasons and was considered one of the greatest actors of his generation.s
He went on to win several Baftas after playing many more famous roles on stage.

Paul Scofield was born on January 21, 1922, in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex where his father was the village schoolmaster.

He was educated at Varndean School in Brighton, where, his passion for acting began. He notoriously wore blond plaits when playing Juliet and Rosalind in school productions.
